Nuwa Pen: Small Innovations That Create Big Impact

Nuwa Pen: Small Innovations That Create Big Impact

Most digital pens or writing solutions boast a cool range of features. But none provide the special combination that Nuwa Pen does – digitization from any paper, a personal AI assistant, and unlimited note storage. While we love talking about these major cornerstones, there are a few things, little things, that we’ve developed to make the Nuwa Experience even better. From multiple options of LLMs for better transcription, to line thickness options, a writer's dashboard, and D1 refills, we’ve thought of everything to make Nuwa Pen the best smartpen for note-taking in its category.

Why do we have three Large Language Models (LLM) for transcription?

As we have been discovering over the last few years, handwriting is incredibly varied and complicated. We all have our own flair or intricacies. Your looping ‘y’ might be angular for someone else, while your plain and simple ‘f’ might be flamboyant for another. And since Nuwa Pen doesn’t employ a paper-like tablet or special paper, its job is made even more difficult. To overcome that hurdle and become the best smartpen of 2025 and beyond, we’ve chosen to include multiple options to ensure you - the user - have options to find the best model for your handwriting. Choosing the right model will affect the accuracy of your transcriptions. But, as with all new tech, there will always be a learning curve, in which you adjust to the pen.

Why bother with line thickness?

While it might not seem obvious, the thickness of the lines makes a difference in digitization. If, for example, your handwriting is compact and cursive, you’ll want to reduce the thickness to get the best results. Otherwise, your handwriting might appear as a blob of black lines. The reverse is true for handwriting that is spread out and detached. It also offers nice flexibility aesthetically speaking, giving you the option to create handwritten titles for your next presentation. Our customizable line thickness is one of the small ways we’ve made Nuwa Pen the best smartpen for paper, any paper, without losing that all-important digital flexibility.

What the hell is a writer's dashboard?

Nowadays we’re all obsessed with statistics and it’s almost impossible to avoid them. KPIs, sales numbers, PBs, and screen times. Is something even real if you can’t measure it with a number? Well yes, and we encourage you to use your Nuwa Pen to take a step away from that type of mindset. At the same time, it’s nice to have an overview. That’s why we’ve included the dashboard – made up of Time Spent Writing, Words Written, Writing Sessions, and Meters Written – our dashboard provides a simple overview with a little fun. You can order these stats via the last 24 hours, week, and month.

Why D1 ink cartridges and which varieties can I use?

Simplicity has been a guiding principle of Nuwa Pen since we started. After all, most of our favorite technology is simple to use and maintain. During our ideation phase, we realized we should stick to one ink refill type to minimize the opportunity for complexity. Developing Nuwa Pen is already complicated enough. Black ballpoint D1 refills are the most common and easily accessible, hence our choice to make it the ink for Nuwa Pen.

Ranging from less than a dollar to around twenty, your Nuwa Pen refills differ a lot. But it’s good to know that they’ll all work with Nuwa Pen as long as they contain black ink. Here are some of the best options, organized by price:
