Will AI replace human writers?

Will AI replace human writers?

When it comes to AI, there are some unsettling questions that now have clear answers. Will AI take human jobs? Most likely. Is it here to stay? Yes. But equally, there’s another side to the coin: Will AI help build a better world? Probably. Will AI create new jobs? Yes.

Yet, the idea of AI still makes many people uncomfortable, and it’s likely to continue making some of us squirm. In the past couple of weeks, a new study has emerged pitting AI poetry against human classics. This study asked non-experts to judge AI-generated poetry alongside works by humanity’s literary heavyweights—Plath, Shakespeare, Byron, and others. More than half the time, people chose the AI-generated poetry as better, particularly in terms of rhythm and beauty. Interestingly, the participants also leaned toward simplicity when making their assessments.

“Our findings suggest that participants employed shared yet flawed heuristics to differentiate AI from human poetry: the simplicity of AI-generated poems may be easier for non-experts to understand, leading them to prefer AI-generated poetry and misinterpret the complexity of human poems as incoherence generated by AI.”
Brian Porter & Edouard Machery

While this study may set alarm bells ringing in creative fields, it also poses an intriguing question: What provides value to human ideas, creativity, and art? Is it the output, the inputs, or a combination of both?

Take Nuwa Pen as an example. Marc, Nuwa’s founder and CEO, dreamt of a pen that remembered all your notes, no matter where you wrote them. This idea grew out of frustration—his desk was littered with notepads, sticky notes, and random scraps of paper. He often lost track of important details or cool ideas. You might say, “Just use your phone or laptop.” But that would eliminate one of the key aspects of Marc’s creative process: the physical act of writing on paper. See why putting pen to paper is a super power here.

It’s this kind of human thought—connecting the dots of one’s life in unique ways—that brought Nuwa Pen to life. Yes, there are easier, perhaps more efficient, solutions. But sometimes, quick, easy, and efficient don’t fit the bill.

In this case, Marc’s life experiences and frustrations inspired his idea. While most consumers will prioritize the effectiveness of the end product, there’s a certain magic and value in the story behind the idea.

This same pattern plays out in other areas too. Amazon began in a dull office, with a spray-painted sign on the wall, as Jeff Bezos set out to sell books. J.K. Rowling started writing Harry Potter on scraps of paper while struggling to make ends meet in Edinburgh. Those origin stories matter. Arguably, Rowling’s struggles are reflected in her series, adding depth and value to the franchise. Bezos's unrelenting ambition might not have been so strong if he started in better circumstances. Returning to poetry, Sylvia Plath’s work resonates deeply because we understand the person behind the words.

“I have done it again.
One year in every ten
I manage it——”
– Lady Lazarus

Written by AI, these 13 words mean little. Written by a young woman battling depression, who attempted suicide multiple times, the value and impact hit you in the face.

So, where do you fit into the era of AI?

We have always been a storytelling species. From cave paintings to medieval tapestries to Marvel films, storytelling is part of our DNA. That’s not going anywhere. And with a declining need for human efficiency due to our new artificial partners, it stands to reason that we focus on what makes us great.

That’s why we developed Nuwa Pen. Combining the best of both worlds, Nuwa Pen allows you to write and ideate on any paper while utilizing AI and advanced technology to streamline your creative process. Whether you’re plotting your next big acquisition or writing your thriller novel, Nuwa Pen helps you get the most out of your notes.
